Platée

Jean-Philippe Rameau 1683 - 1764

‘Ballet bouffon’ in a prologue and three acts to a libretto by Adrien-Joseph Le Valois d’Orville (1745)

Rameau’s Platée is a masterpiece full of exciting, funny and acid moments. This originally Greek fable tells the story of the vain but hideous marsh nymph Plataea. She imagines that Jupiter, King of the Gods, is truly interested in her. His wife Juno is jealous but a glance under the veil proves her jealousy to be completely groundless and she bursts into roars of laughter.

The title role is taken by a man, which allows Harry Nicoll to fully exploit his tragi-comedic talent in this fantastic cross-dressing role.

Co-production with Opera O.T.
