An opera about untameable passion. The main character is confronted with a forbidden love, a blood feud and an arranged marriage, and eventually falls prey to madness.

The emphasis lies on the vocal beauty of this period of operatic history, which is also responsible for giving it a name: bel canto. This extreme art of singing shows emotional and tragic elements in another light. It makes time stand still for a moment. It enchants, and succeeds in conjuring up a feeling of perfect beauty, even if only for a short while.
