Der Ring des Nibelungen Muziekkwartier
The musicians

Obviously, there is a lot more to an opera than what it looks like. Soloists and an orchestra have to be selected and contracted. That is the work of the Intendant and the production office. Decisions must be made over which voice best suits a role, and who is available. Is the chorus big enough for the opera in question, or will extra singers be needed? Everything must be thoroughly thought-through, agreed and prepared – text, music, direction. The principal singers learn their roles themselves, and come to the Reisopera for about six to eight weeks of rehearsals. The production office puts together a rehearsal schedule in consultation with the artistic team. After two or three days of music rehearsals at which the conductor, his assistant and a répétiteur (pianist) are present, the conductor starts work with the singers.

The conductor is often present at music calls with the singers, and takes rehearsals with the orchestra. There are also what are known as ‘Sitzproben’, where the principals, orchestra and chorus work together on musical details. The Nationale Reisopera has its own chorus. They are most often used in so-called ‘chorus operas’. Because they have to study several different pieces each year, chorus operas are interspersed with others that have smaller or no chorus. In this way, chorus members have time to prepare for their next production. Chorus rehearsals begin before stage rehearsals. The chorus master takes these rehearsals, and is also present when the chorus is involved in stage rehearsals. During the performances/he assists the conductor and coaches the chorus.
